In December 2023, my friend and I rented a canoe and booked three nights in the Okefenokee Swamp. In total, we canoed over 30 miles and spent each night under the stars, immersed in the mysterious sounds of the swamp.

The mosquitos weren't bad at all and were only present for a few moments around dusk.

I was initially nervous to be in a canoe in waters filled with alligators. With each basking gator we passed, I became more and more comfortable, until I found myself looking forward to coming upon one to marvel at their impressive size and intricate armored scales.

My favorite voices of the swamp were the Sandhill Cranes. Their otherworldly, prehistoric bugling echoed across the entire swamp and resonated between the cypress trees. Upon hearing one or a group of them, I was transported to a Jurassic swamp and felt truly wild.

Sadly, the Okefenokee Swamp sits under many major flight paths to and from Atlanta, Miami, and Tampa, and is close to a major train distribution hub. Because of this, every single second I recorded was tainted by these distant sounds.

Normally, I wouldn't share such sounds, but my experience in the Oke was so sonically magical despite the noise, I want to share them.
